Rose basket for Mother's Day with TruColor swirl roses

Rose basket cookie by Tunde Dugantsi

When I have some left over royal icing I like to make some flowers that can be used for later projects. This is also a great opportunity to try my new colors.

This time I played with TruColor super red gel natural food color. I needed to add some extra lemon juice to my icing to achieve real red color, as egg white is a base, which turns the natural food color purple. But, as you can see, with some lemon juice I could balance out the acidity and I have some nice red roses. When I had only a little icing left in my bag I added some more white icing to create some dark pink roses, then added more icing to get the lighter shades. I like to use different shades of the same color.

I used my favorite basket cookie cutter again, if you would like to get one from Cookie Cutter Kingdom, use coupon code FRIENDSOFTUNDE to get 10% off.

Here you can see a video of this project:

And some pictures if you would like to have a closer look of the patterns:

Baby cradle cookie

Baby cradle cookie by Tunde Dugantsi

I wanted to create a baby cradle cookie since I have seen this gorgeous baby shower set created by Kenyeres Aniko in February 2014.

My inspiration: baby shower set created by Kenyeres Aniko
But I did not have a cookie cutter to make it and I am way too lazy to hand cut a shape like this. So this project remained a plan until now, when my collaboration with Cookie Cutter Kingdom made it easy for me.

Update: Now, I can print them myself and they are available in my Etsy store.

Mommy Mission - Healthier Easter Cookies, TruColor Natural Food Colors 2

No icing Easter cookies by Tunde Dugantsi

Being a sugar artist and a health conscious mother at the same time is not easy. But I try to do my best. This project is part of the mission.

I have an easy start as my favorite gingerbread recipe is already healthier than the traditional sugar cookies. It has just a little sugar, the rest is honey and one cookie has about 75 calories (while a sugar cookie can be anywhere between 150 and 250, depending on the recipe).

The tough part is the decoration. I usually use royal icing and color it with Americolor gel food colors. They come in gorgeous colors, they are affordable and easy to use. But they are artificial food colors, so I do not let my kids eat it. I do let them eat some colored food, but my cookies are laying around 365 days a year and that would add up in their bodies way too much. So they had to accept this general rule: no colored cookies for them.

However, as all kids, they love colorful things. Fortunately there is a healthy option! I can use Tru Color natural food colors. They are too pricey for me to use for keepsake and presentation cookies, but they come in beautiful vibrant colors. So this is the perfect solution for my project.

Now, the icing... Around Easter my kids eat way to much sugar with all the egg hunts and parties. So I just decided to skip icing. And here is what I came up with:

I chose five happy colors from the Tru Color standard metallic collection. They are really shiny and could be painted on icing as well. But now I am doing something different.

As they contain no preservatives, these colors come in powder form and have to be diluted before use. I took out a little of each color to a paint palette.

Added some distilled water to them and mixed well with a toothpick.

Then I added corn syrup to the colors. It's clear, will dry hard and helps to distribute the paint evenly.

The next step is painting the cookies.

The drying time is a little longer, than the drying time of royal icing, but it will dry hard and shiny.

Mission accomplished:

Flower cookies in spring colors with a "Get Well" plaque cookie

Flower cookies in spring colors

The little girl of my friend had an accident and broke her arm. This is her first serious injury so I decided to send her some cookies to cheer her up. I used a cute little flower cutter and a plaque cutter from Cookie Cutter Kingdom. I wanted to keep it simple, so just flooded all cookies and added some yellow flood icing to the middle of the flower. Then I doodled a different pattern on each cookie. Here is the video:

Easter basket cookies

Easter basket cookies

I always wanted a BIG basket cookie cutter to have plenty of room for decoration. My time has arrived! With my collaboration with Cookie Cutter Kingdom, now I can have all the cutters I can think of. I just love to create my own designs! This one is a 3 piece set: an outline with two optional extra parts. (don't forget to use coupon code FRIENDSOFTUNDE to get 10% OFF if you buy them)
Let's see how they work:

If you use the outline with the simple rounded inside part, you get a simple basket. The focus is on the decoration. See the video tutorial below.

With the other inside part you will get a basket filled with Easter eggs. To see the tutorial for these cookies and learn how to make basket weave, watch this video:

If you use the outline by itself, then you can fill the basket with whatever you want. And here is the video for the bunny and the flower basket:

Baby shower cookie set with gender reveal cookies - video tutorials

Baby shower cookies with gender reveal cookies

I wanted to create some baby shower cookies that look great but are easy and quick to make.

For the visible part of this set I used only 3 icing bags: piping consistency white, flood consistency white and green. But the gender reveal cookies hide an extra color.

We will create this set during our April class at Sweet Wise, more information and registration will be available at their website.

For those who can not join us, I created some videos:

Let's start with the easiest one. You can pick any cute shape and just flood it and make some polka dots inside with wet on wet technique. It's easy, fast and the result is a cute, playful cookie.

For the next cookie I used only dots and teardrops as decoration, but it looks intricate.

When I have some left over royal icing and time, I like to make drop flowers. I can keep them forever and they make the simplest designs look fabulous.

And to finish the set, I made three versions of the rattle gender reveal cookie. Of course the last one is my favorite, as it does rattle!

Valentine's cookies with traditional piping technique

I was so busy around Valentine's that I could not post the cookies from my pre-blog era. But I think it would be nice to have them all here. So here is my most popular design:

Traditional Valentine's gingerbread hearts.
The technique is the same, but changing the colors can result in totally different styles.

Red and white traditional Valentine's gingerbread hearts.
Red and white is the traditional color combination.

Pink and white traditional Valentine's gingerbread hearts.
Pink and white makes it soft and girlish.

Red and black traditional Valentine's gingerbread hearts.
The red and black version is dramatic and sexy.

Pink and black traditional Valentine's gingerbread hearts.
Pink and black is something unexpected.

Easter cookie set with purple drop flowers

Do you remember the purple drop flowers I made with TruColor Purple Carrot natural food coloring? Those colors are so pretty and perfect for Easter! Purple is one of the traditional colors of Easter anyway. So I decided to create an Easter set using those flowers.

Easter cookies with purple drop flowers

Here is the whole set. It consists of a candy box, a cross and three cookies of different sizes.
For this set I used the star cutter set and the cross cutter I designed for Cookie Cutter Kingdom. You can still get 10% OFF with the coupon code FRIENDSOFTUNDE if you place an order with them.

If you would like to see how I created these cookies, watch the videos below.
