Heart cookies with swirl roses (Roses colored with TruColor)

Gingerbrad heart with swirl roses by Tunde Dugantsi

I love my little swirl roses made with TruColor natural food colors. I made these a while ago from some left over royal icing and now I have a box of 4 different shades ready to use. I just mix some green icing for the leaves and the flowery cookies are ready.

I love hearts. It's one of the most traditional shapes for gingerbread and they are great for Mother's Day, birthdays, or as a thank you gift. I always keep some, to be able to give as a little gift for any occasion.

This is an easier project than it seems. As I already have the flowers ready, I just have to mix the green icing for the leaves and I use white for flooding and the patterns. This 4 inch heart shape is ideal for me as a play cookie. There is enough room to make some nice patterns, but it's still a quick project.

First, I draw the grid for the laces, or the eyelets, I flood the cookies and let them dry.
Then I make the little flower arrangements and decorate with white icing.
